If you are moving to Canada or North America, you have probably been wondering what food items you can or can’t bring with you. In preparation for your trip, don't let concerns about what food you can or cannot bring to Canada leave you confused.
The following are foods you can bring from Nigeria to Canada:
Flours and Carbs: Yam Flour (Elubo Isu), Garri, Plantain Flour, Beans Flour, Yam Flour, Fufu Flour, Cassava Flour, Wheat Flour, etc.
Seeds and Grains: Ukwa Seeds, Peeled Beans, Peeled Egusi, etc
Seafood: Dried Catfish, Dried Fish, Dried Snails, Prawns, Bonga Fish Fillet, Pawn Powder, Crayfish Powder, Stockfish, etc. are all permitted, so long as they are for private use only
Seasoning & Spices: Jollof Spice, Mixed Spices, Pepper Soup Spices, Banga Spices, Black Pepper Spice, Crayfish Powder, Garlic Powder, and Ginger Powder are all permitted.
Condiments and Soup Ingredients: Blended Ogbono, Cameron Pepper, Ugba, Blended Chili Pepper (Ata gungun), Dried Iru, etc. are all permitted.
Snacks: Groundnut, Plantain Chips, Kulikuli, etc. are permitted.
Vegetables: Dehydrated Ugwu, Dehydrated Ewedu, Dried Oha Leaf, Dehydrated Water Leaf, etc. are all permitted in minimal quantities.
Traveling with your favorite foods shouldn't be an issue as long as you have accurate information about the approved foods. For more information, please check the CFIA website https://inspection.canada.ca/eng/1297964599443/1297965645317.
You must also declare everything you have with you when going through customs.
At www.buyandcarry.com, we carry most if not all of the food items that you can pack with you to most countries of the world. We have set up our products factoring different country restrictions in, such that if you are unable to ship a product to a particular location, you will be notified at checkout.
One more thing to bear in mind when packing foodstuff for travel is that the way your items are packaged goes a long way. Are you using regular plastic bags versus Sealable/Ziploc bags, are your dried proteins vacuum sealed, are your condiments properly dried etc?
When packing food, transparent bags are best since they allow airport staff to easily inspect them without having to open them. Your time and theirs will be saved.
